Dan Da Dan: Evil Eye - The incredible saga of Momo and Okarun’s

Dan Da Dan: Evil Eye marks the triumphant return of the series that captivated fans around the world last year. This Japanese animated film brings together the first three episodes of the second season, offering an expanded and cinematic experience.  Co-directed by Fūga Yamashiro and Abel Góngora — the latter also responsible for the striking opening sequence — and produced by the innovative studio Science SARU, the film promises to maintain a perfect balance of action, horror, romantic comedy, and supernatural elements. With a track record of extremely positive reception — the first season became a phenomenon on social media and was featured in major publications like The New York Times and The Washington Post — this second season aims to exceed expectations with even more mystery and intensity. The return of the creative forces behind the anime, such as screenwriter Hiroshi Seko and composer Kensuke Ushio, ensures that Evil Eye preserves the hybrid soul of genres that made the original series so engaging. A Plot that will surprise you The plot of Evil Eye picks up exactly where the first season left off: Momo, Okarun, and Jiji are at the latter’s house, located in a rural village known as Byakuja Village. The trio is investigating a supposed curse upon the residence, but soon find themselves confronted by the mysterious Kito family — landowners of much of the region. The narrative thickens when Momo is attacked at a local hot spring, in a scene that combines visceral tension and supernatural elements, typical of the series. The presence of the Kito women interrogating and intimidating the protagonists sets the tone for an investigation that grows increasingly intense and dangerous. The story reaches a breaking point when the heroes discover an ancient and cursed chamber beneath Jiji’s house. Inside, they uncover a connection with an ancestral deity — Tsuchinoko, a god that, in the story, takes the form of a versatile “Mongolian Death Worm.” At that moment, Jiji succumbs to the power of the “Evil Eye,” becoming a threat not only to the protagonists but to the entire village. The climax of the first three episodes, compiled in the film, features an intense escape and an emotional and physical battle, in which Momo and Okarun must save not only Jiji, but also lift the curse looming over Byakuja Village. The mix of horror, teenage romantic comedy, and supernatural adventure creates a multifaceted and original storyline. Meet the Main Characters Momo Ayase is a strong-spirited young woman from a family of mediums. In the Evil Eye arc, she takes on an even more proactive role, facing dangers head-on. Her determination to protect Jiji reveals a quiet bravery that balances Okarun’s more impulsive side. Ken “Okarun” Takakura – The occult geek of the story, Okarun follows Momo closely in all investigations. His exotic knowledge and curiosity about the supernatural make him crucial in the battle against the “Evil Eye.” In contrast to her emotional approach, Okarun keeps meticulous records and seeks logical solutions, even in the face of paranormal phenomena. Jiji – The central figure of the mystery, Jiji is the personal link between Momo and Okarun: a childhood friend and former crush. In the new season, his house becomes the main setting of the plot, and his possession by the “Evil Eye” dramatically alters his relationship with the protagonists. Momo’s emotional suffering due to Jiji’s condition adds depth to the story’s drama. The Kito Family – Antagonists introduced in this part of the saga, the Kito family members represent hidden forces guarding dangerous secrets. Their intentions are ambiguous — both protectors of the village and power-wielders — creating tension among viewers about who can truly be trusted. Tsuchinoko (Mongolian Death Worm) – More than just a mythical creature, this deity blurs the line between folklore and terrifying entity. The creature’s introduction expands the series’ mythology while reinforcing the spiritual undertones that permeate the entire narrative. Evil Eye – The “Evil Eye” is the main antagonistic force of the new arc — a vengeful presence that takes over Jiji. Its manifestation is both symbolic and literal, representing fear, power, and a threat that transcends the human realm. Secondary Characters – Secondary figures such as local villagers and elders help create atmosphere and context, bringing Byakuja Village to life. They embody collective fears, mystical traditions, and the hardships of living under an ancient curse, reinforcing the setting’s mood. Science SARU’s Hybrid Animation Using techniques that blend traditional animation with digital tools (including Flash), the Science SARU studio delivers a fluid, organic, and modern aesthetic. This approach proves ideal for scenes of horror, supernatural action, and intimate moments. The combination of Fūga Yamashiro’s sensitive style with Abel Góngora’s vibrant visual flair — previously responsible for the series’ opening — results in a rich visual narrative, full of movement and nuance. Kensuke Ushio, known for projects like Chainsaw Man and DEVILMAN crybaby, returns to enhance emotions through his soundtrack. The dark and mysterious tone of Evil Eye gains crucial emotional support from his musical compositions. Why It’s Worth Watching First, because of the perfect balance of genres. Dan Da Dan seamlessly shifts between intense action scenes, supernatural horror, teenage romantic moments, and comedy — delivering a complete and memorable experience. Another point is the consistent animation quality. Science SARU continues to evolve creatively, delivering impressive scenes, especially in battles with entities and in how space is used in fight and spiritual confrontation sequences. Moreover, the character development offers genuine emotional depth.
